Should I consider a Google Ads campaign?
First off let’s just be clear about what Google Ads are.
Google Ads are the search results that you see on the right hand side when you make a Google search as well as the top three in the main section, below which you’ll find the ‘organic’ search results.
Will Google Ads work for my business?
Google Ads are not appropriate or effective for every business. For companies that operate in a very competitive market the cost of the adverts may be prohibitively expensive.
It also depends on the level of demand for your products and services.
In addition you need to be able to cope with the volume and provide a good level of customer service to convert the enquiries, make sales and of course profits.
However, if the factors for success are in your favour, Google Ads can be extremely effective.
Drive traffic to your website
Google Ads will drive traffic to your website therefore the experience and ease of use for the visitor once they arrive will also contribute to the success of the advert.
Google Ads are set up using key words, which are search terms that an Internet searcher uses.
Search engine optimisation (SEO) works in much the same way. Each of the pages on your website should be optimised or set up to reflect the subject of the page by optimising it to the specific key words. This takes time to become effective (and is only one part of a time consuming SEO process). So if your website is new you can use Google Ads to create instant results and boost traffic.
If your website has been in existence for sometime but no attention has been made to SEO it would also be appropriate to use Google Ads to drive traffic to your website.
New product or service launch
If you are launching a new product or service and need instant visibility, Google Ads are a great way to do this. The small carefully worded adverts can be eye catching and drive traffic to a specific web page where more information can be obtained or orders made.
How much does Google Ads cost?
You only pay for the service when someone clicks on the link in your Google Ad. This is known as Pay Per Click or PPC.
The great thing about Google Ads is that you can assign a budget. And to get the most out of it you can even define what time of day you want the adverts to be shown and within which geographical area.
The popularity of the key words you choose for your Google Ad is one factor in how much you need to pay for each click. You can’t just guess and it isn’t about choosing the keywords with the largest search volume or the lowest cost per click. The key is in finding keywords that produce cost effective results. This can only be determined by trial and analysis.
The other factor to consider is the fee to set up the campaign if you decided to use an expert. This will vary according to the size and reach of your campaign.
Can I create a Google Ad myself?
Absolutely!
Google has created some excellent videos to get you started and there are lots of ‘frequently asked questions’ that can help you.
However, I would recommend that if you are serious about using Google Ads as part of your marketing strategy that you engage the services of an expert. Their in-depth knowledge and years of experience will easily ensure that you have the best chance of return on your Google Ad investment and it won’t be an effective test if you don’t fully understand the complexities, such as the correct use of matching options, the impact of ‘quality score’ etc. On the face of it Google Ads seems easy, but the reality is somewhat different.
