A common networking mistake. Don’t tell me what you do.
Meet Jane. She’s not long started her business after qualifying as a Hypnotherapist. She’s eager to start working with some clients who will pay for her services. She’s heard of a networking group local to her and thought she might go along to find out more.
Having been welcomed by the organiser she is introduced to a group of people and welcoming smiles are exchanged. The person on her left looks at her badge and says ‘Hello Jane, what do you do?’ Now at this point Jane should beware! This is a trap; albeit an unintentional one.
Jane could be tempted to reply ‘I’m a Hypnotherapist. I’ve just set up in practice not far from here.’ By replying in this way, Jane has said what she does but she hasn’t said how she helps people. In fact, Jane has experience in helping people who are addicted to smoking.
Jane’s reply to the question, ‘What do you do? should be ‘I help adults who are struggling to give up smoking by looking at the triggers, their responses and teaching them techniques to deal with their cravings and feelings. Jane has avoided a common networking mistake.
Immediately Jane has opened the door to her world. She has clearly explained how she helps people and her networking friend knows whether she needs her services or knows of someone that she could introduce her to.
