When is the right time to niche?
Taking the first steps towards developing a niche can be a scary thing to do.
How do you choose where to focus? What if it doesn’t work out? What will people think of the changes you make? Where do you start?
You’re not alone with these thoughts, which is why I’d like to introduce you to Nick Allsopp. Nick is a professional coach. His situation may resonate with you and help you make a decision on your next niching steps.
After 30 years in the corporate world, within a wide range of sectors and roles, Nick became an independent coach in 2017 to help organizations improve business results by developing individuals’ potential.
Nicola: Why did you feel it was the right time to develop a niche?
Nick: When I became independent, I thought I had a really good idea of what it was going to be like, who I was going to work with and how I was going to help them. The reality has been quite different.
I also quickly realised that there are a lot of coaches out there doing very similar things. It can feel quite overwhelming at times.
During the last four years, I’ve worked with some great companies and individuals in a variety of ways and this experience has been invaluable. It’s allowed me to understand the areas of coaching that are most important to me and how I’m able to get the best results for my clients.
I know that being more focused will help me stand out in the crowd, which is why the Super Niched programme was perfect timing to help me work out how to do this.
Nicola: What aspects of the Super Niched programme have helped you most?
Nick: The workshops being virtual and one hour per week over five weeks was really handy for fitting around coaching assignments, and it gave me time to think between sessions and allow ideas to form.
I particularly liked the session on creating our mission statement. It really helped to draw out what’s important to me and why my coaching is slightly different to others and why my clients gain the results they’re looking for.
I also, valued Nicola’s personal input throughout. To be able to speak to someone about my thoughts and ideas was very helpful. Nicola clearly has a lot of experience; her questions were insightful as were the suggestions she made.
Nicola: What can you do now that you couldn’t do before the Super Niched programme?
I had a lot of things going around in my mind, the Super Niched programme has enabled me to channel my thoughts and make sense of them.
To anyone who’s thinking of joining the Super Niched programme, I’d say that it’s a great way to set a time to work on your business, which is so important. The combination of the structure and topics of the workshops, plus plenty of discussion time with Nicola, really helped me make decisions that I’m confident about.
I know how I want to niche and the types of coaching clients I want to attract, and I have a plan. This feels very exciting.
